Chandler's Gun Shop and Shooting Ranges: Concealed Carry Course

About Concealed Carry Course

Concealed Carry Course

If you are wanting to get your concealed handgun license, you've come to the right place!

Note that all registration for both first time and renewal licenses starts on the DPS web site, www.txdps.state.tx.us/rsd/chl/. Fingerprints are also taken electronically; sites for service can be found on the DPS website.

We take care of notary seals, passport photos, and will be glad to assist you with any questions you may have about the process. All of these services are INCLUDED FREE as part of your class. Students will need to bring a packed lunch on the day of class. There are cold drink machines available at the academy. With completion of the class, you will recieve a FREE 30 day range pass.

You're ready to learn, here's what you need to do and what you can expect.

Classes are very informal, so dress comfortably. Remember that part of the class involves a brief period of time on the gun range, so bring appropriate clothing for outdoor wear. On the day of class, please arrive 10 to 15 minutes prior to scheduled class time. You will be asked to fill out a brief information sheet.

During the classroom portion of the training, we use a PowerPoint presentation to walk through the various laws and regulations relating to the use of deadly force, concealed carry rules and regulations as well as dispute resolution. Also covered will be legal, moral and ethical ramifications of the use of deadly force. We can't guarantee that you will pass, but we've never had a student fail yet. Since the range and classroom are at the same location, there is no travel time to the range, or any additional charges to use the range.

The "shooting" part of the class involves firing a total of 50 rounds of ammunition at a DPS approved silhouette target. You fire 20 rounds from 3 yards, another 20 rounds from 7 yards, and the final 10 rounds from 15 yards. It is a rare shooter who fails to pass the test; most folks have passed before they leave the 7 yard test line!

We strongly recommend that you qualify with a semi-automatic pistol; this will allow you to carry either a revolver or a semi-automatic. If you qualify with a revolver, that is all you will be legally able to carry concealed.

If your weapon malfunctions, you will have to rent a weapon from the gun shop. Gun rentals are $15, plus the cost of ammo (if needed). Our instructors will inspect weapons prior to the shooting qualification.

If you do not have experience operating a weapon, you will need to take the Beginner Handgun Lesson(s) prior to taking the CHL course. The CHL course is not the class to learn how to shoot. We have several classes during the year for this, but with enough notice, we can arrange a private class if necessary. Contact the Gun Shop for more details.
